Unauthorized Withdrawal: Bank Robbers Dug Tunnel for 6 Months
It took thieves six months to dig a 98-foot-long underground tunnel leading to the basement vault of a bank in Buenos Aires. The criminals managed to empty out only 10 percent of the 1,408 safety deposit boxes in the bank.
The robbers began digging the tunnel in July after renting a building near the bank, buenosairesnews.net reported. After the robbery , police found the passageway – which is more than 98 feet long and 3 feet in diameter – stocked with water bottles and equipped with carpeting, lights and ventilation.
"Tools were found inside of the tunnel," Marin Niklinson, the prosecutor in the case, told news sources.
According to bank security tapes, the thieves completed the tunnel during the long New Year's weekend and broke into the basement vault, making off with 134 safety deposit boxes Monday morning in a car.
Police have not yet disclosed the total amount stolen as they are still working with the box owners to estimate the value of the snatched goods .
