When Does Ramadan Begin?
Ramadan is celebrated as the holiest month of the Islamic calendar because that was the month that Muslims believe their holy book, the Koran, was first revealed by Allah to the prophet Muhammad.
In celebration, Muslims who are physically able are required to fast each day of the month, from sunrise to sunset. Because Islamic holidays are tied to a lunar calendar the exact times for the beginning and end of Ramadan are not known in advance each year.
In 2010, Ramadan began on Aug. 11 and will conclude around Sept. 10.
Islamic scholar Azim Nanji, writing in “The Religious World,” (Prentice Hall, 1993) describes Ramadan:
“Fasting begins at daybreak and ends after the setting of the sun. The spiritual, moral, and physical discipline observed during these hours include a more intensive commitment to the values and practices of Islam, as well as refraining from food, drink, and sexual activity.... The rhythm of abstinence and quietude during the daylight hours of Ramadan alternates with times of feasting and socializing throughout the evenings.”
Fasting is one of the five pillars, or main duties, required of all able-bodied Muslims. The others are daily prayer, making a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime, charity, and making a profession of faith.
