Which City Has Hosted the Super Bowl the Most Times?
The decision on Tuesday by NFL owners to award the 2014 Super Bowl to the joint bid submitted by the New York Giants and New York Jets was a significant milestone for America's unofficial national holiday, Super Bowl Sunday.
For the first time, the Super Bowl will be played in the largest metropolitan area in the country which also happens to be the No. 1 media market in the U.S.
Super Bowl XLVIII will take place at the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey, which is owned by the Giants and Jets and is a short subway ride from Manhattan. New York (or New Jersey, if you will) will finally get a chance to host the big game, an event that some economists believe will provide a $550 million boost to the local economy, New York Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson told news sources.
While the Big Apple is a Super Bowl rookie, for a few other cities, hosting a Super Bowl is practically routine.
Miami has played host to the Super Bowl more times than any other city. Ten Super Bowls have taken place there, the first five at the legendary Orange Bowl stadium (in 1968, 1969, 1971, 1976, and 1979), and the last five at Joe Robbie Stadium (in 1989, 1995, 1999, 2007, and 2010).
Miami is also the only city to host the contest in two consecutive years – it hosted Super Bowls II and III.
Coming in a close second is New Orleans, which has hosted nine Super Bowls (most recently, in 2002). The Louisiana Superdome in that city also holds the distinction of being the single stadium with the most Super Bowls under its belt, with six. (Tulane Stadium hosted New Orleans' first three Super Bowls.) Super Bowl XLVII in 2013 is set to be played at the Superdome, which means New Orleans will then tie Miami for most prolific Super Bowl host.
Los Angeles has hosted seven Super Bowls, but hasn't done so since 1993. That's because the NFL enacted a rule to only award Super Bowls to cities with a team, and LA has been without one since both the Rams and Raiders left town in 1995.
The 2014 game will also mark the first time the Super Bowl will be played outdoors in a cold-weather city. Since the first NFL-AFL World Championship Game (the game wasn't called the Super Bowl until Super Bowl III) was played in Los Angeles in 1967, professional football's biggest battle has primarily been waged in warm-weather cities. The few times the Super Bowl has ventured into more frigid territory, such as Detroit and Minneapolis, the game was played inside the cozy confines of a climate-controlled dome.
The possibility of a snowstorm during the league's marquee event worries some owners, but the NFL built its legacy with classic cold-weather games like the 1967 "Ice Bowl" between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys.
Will a snowy Super Bowl in the New York area be another unforgettable NFL moment? We'll find out, in 2014.
