Stunning Image: Spotted Harlequin Shrimp

This image of harlequin shrimp (Hymenocera picta) earned Phillip Gillette second place in the 2012 student underwater photography contest run by the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Gillette took the photo in the waters off Similan Islands, Thailand.
Harlequin shrimp are a species found around coral reefs in the Indian and Pacific oceans. The colorful creatures can range from brown with purple spots to a lighter coloring with brown and blue spots. The shrimp almost exclusively eat starfish and can grow up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) in length.
