Alzheimer's Patient Is First to Have Pacemaker Implanted in Brain

Kathy Sanford is the first Alzheimer's patient in the United States to have a pacemaker implanted in her brain . The pacemaker was implanted last October at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center. The researchers say the deep brain stimulation implant is similar to a cardiac pacemaker device, and the wiring of the pacemaker could stimulate nearby areas. The same technology is used to treat patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Sanford is the first person to have the implant in a study to see if brain pacemakers can improve functioning in Alzheimer's patients.
