An initial public offering, also known as an IPO or stock market launch, is the first time a company sells stock to the public. Small and large companies can have an IPO to become a publicly traded enterprise, usually with the aim of raising capital to be used for development, growth and expansion.
The opening price of the stock depends on the company's perceived market value, which is often determined by an investment banking firm.
