Astonishing Video: Time-Lapse of Red Aurora

|
This time-lapse video of the aurora australis captures rarely seen red hues in the sky.
The red colors were caused by the recent powerful solar storm which brought powerful winds from the sun's surface.. Auroras are caused when solar winds collide with earth's atmosphere. Highly-charged electrons from these winds stream away from the sun at about 1 million miles per hour and are attracted to earth's magnetic poles. There, they collide with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere. The color of the aurora depends on which atom is struck, and the altitude of the meeting. Red and pinkish hues are seen when oxygen atoms collide in the atmosphere.
