A solar storm will hit Earth today and could cause unusually intense Northern lights as it sends radiation toward us. This video shows what happens during intense solar flare activity on the sun. The short video shows footage of what a recent solar flare looked like created by NASA and the European Space Agency.
The solar storm follows an M9-class solar flare that occurred Sunday. Also called X-flares, these solar eruptions send charged particles toward Earth. X-class flares occur when a large buildup of energy in the sun's magnetic field is suddenly released.
Scientists say the solar storm could disrupt satellites and GPS systems, though the threat is low.
