Astonishing Video: Deep-sea Creatures at Volcanic Vent
![]() |
An underwater robot called Kiel 6000 took this video of creatures that live in deep waters near thermal vents. The volcanic vents are in the South West Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean. Researchers from the University of Southampton took the video which shows the vent is teeming with life. Scientists spotted yeti crabs, scaly-foot snails and sea cucumbers.
Creatures like the ones in the video live near hydrothermal vents that spew out very hot, mineral-rich water. Diverse ecosystems are able to thrive on the bacteria and other life forms in the water and through the heat provided by these vents.
