Earth Hour 2011 will happen on Saturday, March 26, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm (local time). During that hour, all lights should be switched off.
This annual event started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million people and about 2,000 businesses went dark for an hour in order to save energy and raise awareness of climate change. The event has gained more and more participants each year. Last March, hundreds of millions of people switched off their lights during Earth Hour 2010, and landmarks and public buildings in 128 countries officially powered down, according to EarthHour.org.
