Environmentalists and volunteers in the Philippines province of Camarines Sur planted more than 64,000 saplings in the span of a few minutes, breaking the Guinness Book World Record for the most trees planted simultaneously.
On Feb. 23, nearly 7,000 people travelled to Tinambac, Camarines Sur to participate in an enormous reforestation effort . The record attempt is part of Sugod El Verde, or Operation Green Tree, an initiative to plant a total of 12 million trees in the logged forests of Camarines Sur by 2012.
One supervisor had to monitor each group of 50 participants in order to keep track of how many saplings each person planted. After the attempt, a GWR judge – who also planted a tree as part of the effort – tallied up the records and determined the total number of trees.
Although the Guinness Book World Record guidelines allowed for up to an hour to plant the trees , the record attempt only took 15 minutes to complete. By planting 64,096 trees, the participants broke the previously held record of 50,033 trees, which were planted in India last year.
